The NSW Parliament Committee on Transport and Infrastructure will investigate transport infrastructure options supporting the airport and the aerotropolis and how they will integrate with Sydney's broader transport system.
The Committee will also look at how transport infrastructure will be funded. "The Western Sydney International Airport and Western Sydney Aerotropolis have the potential to deliver transformational change for communities in Western Sydney. Providing a range of transport options to and from the region is crucial to ensuring the benefits of the project are maximised," said Committee Chair, Lynda Voltz MP.
As part of its inquiry, the Committee will also consider the impact of employment movements in the Western and Southwestern suburbs of Sydney and how to reduce road usage around the airport and aerotropolis. "We know that the airport and the aerotropolis are going to attract many more people to Western Sydney. A key priority in this inquiry is to identify opportunities to minimise traffic congestion on surrounding roads wherever possible."
The Western Sydney Aerotropolis is a major infrastructure project designed to convert part of Western Sydney into a major economic hub. At its core, there will be a new city, Bradfield City Centre, which will provide a range of commercial and community services. A catalyst for the aerotropolis is the new airport, which is expected to open in late 2026 and provide capacity for approximately 10 million regional, domestic and international passengers annually.
The airport is also expected to expand as demand grows in the coming decades. The airport is being built to address long-term aviation capacity limitations in Sydney, boost economic activity and provide employment opportunities closer to home for residents of Western Sydney.
The Committee is currently inviting agencies, businesses, industry groups, community organisations and the public to make a submission. For more information about the inquiry, including the terms of reference and information on making a submission, see the Committee's webpage.
